The Cottongrass Shirt Dress
In spring and early summer across the wet peat ground of the fells, cottongrass blooms in quiet white tufts against golden, weathered stems. Seeing those bright heads floating above the grass near Clappersgate inspired the whole balance of this piece: warm earthy sand paired with clean, graphic white details.
Cut with a long, relaxed silhouette that falls into a gathered drop-waist skirt, giving the bottom section weight and gentle movement as you walk. The upper body features a pointed collar and long sleeves with soft gathering at the shoulders and cuffs, secured by long trailing wrist ties.
The white contrast stitching outlines the collar, placket, seams, and asymmetrical chest pocket, echoing the delicate stems of bog cotton. Finished down the center front with large milk-white buttons that echo the softness of the flower heads against the cloth.
