Beyond repetition and mathematical order there is peace and harmony. Agnes Martin’s almost annoying and obsessive repetition of the grid hides the lost meaning of innocence, simplicity and modesty. This dress itself breaks the barrier of apparent rigidity speaking about the act of mastering the smallest of gestures through repetition. By sticking to the roots of things, one breeds humility and remembers the primordial order of everything.
Poem
The turbulence of a chaotic life
a whole stranger to me.
The same grid repeats itself to infinity;
Beyond apparent mathematical order
my soul yearns for non-finite simplicity;
I see evolution in the stability of modesty
rulers and pencils on canvases nurture
my catalyst to innocence of trees
and nature’s sole intrinsic odder;
